Re: Stó:lō Tourism Commission Place Name Sign at the Tourism Chilliwack Visitor Centre

The Stó:lō Tourism Commission is pleased to announce that our BC150 Project, “Tl’o Tem Wiyothtset’, ‘It’s Always Our Time’ will have a Place Name Sign installation at the Tourism Chilliwack Visitor Centre. We invite you to attend the installation ceremony at 44150 Luckakuck Way, on Saturday May 23rd, at 11am. Light refreshments will be provided.

The “Lhílheqey” – Mt. Cheam Place Name Sign is one of several place name signs being installed within the Stó:lō traditional lands, and will include partnerships with many First Nation communities and partner organizations. The first sign was installed earlier this year at Tzeachten, in front of the Stó:lō Artisan Centre.

The signs include:

  • a visual silhouette or photograph of the geographic landmark
  • its name in the language of the Stó:lō-Halq’eméylem
  • the names English translation
  • a web link where people may access a story, map & pertinent information relating to the designated geographic landmarks.

“I think it’s important that people understand our place names through our language so they have a better understanding of our relationship to the land”, Naxaxalhts’i, Sonny McHalsie, Co-Director, Sto:lo Research & Resource Management Centre. “We are pleased to participate in the Stó:lō Tourism Commission Place Name Sign program. This is a great new learning opportunity for visitors to Chilliwack that are interested in First Nation tourism experiences”, Brian Coombes, Executive Director,Tourism Chilliwack. Stó:lō Tourism Commission gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Province of British Columbia through BC150 Years Ministry of Tourism Culture and the Arts Initiative.
